Comedy by the Numbers: The 169 Secrets of Humor and Popularity by Eric Hoffman and Gary Rudoren

February 17, 2014

This book is as much a comedy book as it is a book about comedy. Some of the gags are laugh-out-loud funny, some snort-inducing stupid. It’s good for reading in small bits—with short sections on everything from #159 UNDERWEAR to #116 SARCASM, #76 MISPRONOUNCIATION OF WORDS to #66 KILLING A LOT OF PEOPLE. Sometimes, when I wasn’t in the mood, I found some of it to be groan-inducing. But when I was up for it, this book was funny in the way a John Hodgeman book is funny. You’ll laugh more than you’ll learn, but I suppose that’s the point.
