The Creative Process Illustrated by Glenn Griffin and Deborah Morrison

I saw a talk given by Griffin and Morrison, both advertising instructors, at South by Southwest this year. This book is the result of a project in which they asked advertising creatives to illustrate their creative process. This book collects 35 of their favorite illustrations, along with a short profile of each creative and thoughts on the process.

The illustrations range from complicated flow charts to zen simplicity—one simply states “question everything.” Some are serious, some are funny. My favorite is a series of coffee mug rings with a small list of medications below it. There are no new secrets here. It’s really a collection of different ways of articulating ideas that anyone who works in a creative field will be familiar with. Nonetheless, it’s a fun book to look through, and it’s full of wisdom and insight.

I was also delighted to see that the advertising blog I co-author, Makin’ Ads, is included in one of the illustrations as a source of inspiration.

      Thanks, Glenn. I enjoyed the talk you and Deborah gave at SXSW. I used some of the content in a presentation on the creative process that I gave to a group of clients a few months ago. They loved the illustrations. I also recommended it on my ad blog for students/junior creatives that I co-author, Thanks for the comment.
